Just thinking

have you read?

Reading is one of my favorite pasttimes - actually it is even more than that. And I am an unabashed fiction reader. Fiction writers have the liberty to take human experiences and crystalize their very essence, dealing not just with facts but with the truths behind them.

Books are also something very personal. Some will really speak to you, will pluck that special string that brings you a moment of recognition and understanding; others - just at well-writen - simply won't resonate in you.

Some authors that brought me "aha-moments" are: Alice Munro, Andrea Barrett, Jane Austen, David Gutterson, Alan Lightman, George Eliott. And once a year I have to read a Dickens. To me he is a master of telling convoluted stories with a multitude of strands weaving them all into a soul-satisfying end.

This guide to Jane Austen's writings, life and times was another project in my masters' program.
trip to chawton and winchester
During the summer of 2003 I spent some time in England. Of course I took the chance of a little side trip to Chawton and Winchester. Here are a few outside photos of the last residences of Jane Austen.
